As a testimony of my undying admiration and respect for teachers and their noble profession, I have reserved a segment of my regular Sunday radio program for a tribute to them during the past twelve (12) years. As many people can attest, without certain teachers in our lives, our road would have been traveled in a very different manner. Many of us can recall the important role many teachers have played in our lives and continue to play in our children’s education. I hasten to add that it is not only their ability to teach the subjects, but the way they share their wisdom, compassion, time, energy and love. Sister Gabrielle Mason – former Principal of the St. Joseph’s Convent (St. George’s) - A great Grenadian teacher and a woman, whom I greatly respected, once described education in the most profound manner as follows: “What remains long after that which was learnt in school was forgotten.” In my opinion, teachers have one of the most difficult and critical careers in the world. They should by any standard, be revered and treasured. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. The simple truth is, many people don’t know how difficult a job a teacher has and therefore take their positions for granted. I have spoken to quite a number of teachers during my career as a motivation speaker both at home, within the region and now here in South Florida. The challenges all seem to bear some similarity in that many have shared with me that if they were somehow able to get over some of the “political” stuff and /or the parts where they were clearly being taken for granted, they would absolutely love the most important part – teaching and the kids! Many of the issues which create internal stress for teachers seem to be without solution. During my research over the years fueled by my deep desire to provide answers, I was able to encounter many excellent solutions and through both my programs and personal interventions invite many teachers to take them to heart and apply them where and when necessary. I admire the fact that teachers have chosen teaching as a career and as a way to give back to the world – for without TEACHERS, our various nations would be in deep trouble. As the old saying goes: “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” Without the experience of teachers in the lives of “some”, they have been served up a menu of ignorance – notwithstanding its expense! Teachers can rest assured that in me they have a very devoted friend. It is my hope that my programs have and will continue to create even more joy in what I believe is one of the most honorable and noble vocations ever developed. I am therefore pleased to share my audio presentations – “Teaching from the Heart” on this website (CaribbeanPerspective.com ) on a continuous basis! Enjoy and think of the role of teachers as a worthwhile partnership you ought not to avoid for your children’s benefit. Trust me – it is worth it! |
